Celebrating Colour: Very Peri, Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2022

Expect to see a lot of purple in 2022.  Not any old purple, though: “Very Peri”, the new “periwinkle shade of blue” selected by Pantone’s Colour Institute as their 2022 colour of the year.

Pantone 17-3938

Very Peri (Pantone 17-3938) is a new shade, that didn’t previously exist in the colour company’s exhaustive catalogue. They created it by blending blue tones with a violet-red; the result is a colour that most people would pinpoint as lavender.  In a typically insubstantial explanation, Pantone described their choice as being inspired “by the rise of the metaverse, as well as the impact of coronavirus lockdowns”.  Right oh.

“Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.”
— Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute.

Whatever your opinion on the creation of a novel shade by the the international colour standard giant, the fact remains that it will inform and is reflective of many design decisions and trends this year.  Very Peri is a colour often found in the natural world, and the resurgence in purple across certain sectors (think the growing trend for retro 80s outdoor wear such as purple fleeces) will mean that we see more and more of it.  Will that translate into an increase in our customers specifying the RAL equivalent of Pantone 17-3938 this year or next?  Perhaps, but probably no more than we would have normally as people become more adventurous in their choice of colour around their home and realise the ease with which they can come back to us in a year or two to have the steel legs, frames and brackets of their re-powder-coated in a new colour depending on how their tastes or décor have changed.

Likewise, if you’re looking at this and like the look of Very Peri, you could always shave your existing Cord furniture updated so that it’s bang on colour trend for 2022.  Just get in touch and we’ll make it happen for you!
